Dajti National Park pilot: protected areas as drivers of a Green and Just Transition

A pilot action in Tirana and Dajti National Park explores how protected areas can become practical drivers of a Green and Just Transition (GJT)—by combining biodiversity protection with sustainable mobility, energy efficiency and visitor education. Work has already started through coordination with the park’s management and ranger team, focusing on priorities such as conserving biodiversity and restoring habitats, strengthening environmental education and visitor awareness, and encouraging low-carbon practices and energy efficiency in park facilities.

A key technical output has been the finalisation of a technical data analysis report supporting green transition planning for the Dajti Mountain area. The report focuses on two tangible interventions: solar-powered bicycle trail infrastructure and off-grid smart benches. It analyses solar irradiation potential along the main cycling corridors, identifies suitable locations for solar charging points, and assesses the feasibility of smart benches equipped with USB/Type-C charging and Wi-Fi hotspots. These measures aim to support eco-tourism, improve the visitor experience, and reduce reliance on fossil energy sources while maintaining a minimal ecological footprint.

In parallel, stakeholder engagement has been expanded through public events and networking, including outreach to potential partners and businesses. The pilot also includes a questionnaire on renewable energy and the green transition in Dajti National Park, used to identify concrete needs—especially around training, capacity building and awareness. Based on early findings, planned follow-up actions include targeted training for staff and companies, student internships to support park activities, and broader community outreach initiatives.

Next steps (January–April 2026) will focus on turning the technical concept into a pipeline for implementation and investment. Planned activities include workshops with business partners and associations, a podcast series to increase visibility and attract investment interest, a regional investment forum, staff training, and a community awareness campaign—culminating in a final workshop in April.
